Lump Charcoal Showdown: High-End vs Budget Brands

Boy did I get an earful in the other charcoal showdown. Person after person said that lump charcoal is the only charcoal and briquettes are just imposters. In this video, I test to see which lump charcoal provides the best and if it is worth spending more to get something that goes up in smoke! The Huntsman grill from Spider Grills has gotten a lot of buzz, but can it live up to they hype? I've had some time to test it and let you know what I learned. Spider Grills gave a great deal for all of you. If you use promo code "grilltop" at checkout, they'll throw in a battery for free so you don't have to use an extension cord to power your Huntsman. Why I stopped letting charcoal get white hot

We all make mistakes and using a charcoal chimney can be a bit of a learning curve and getting the timing right for dumping your lit charcoal takes some practice and experimentation. In this video, I delve into the age-old question: when is the optimal time to dump your coals out of a charcoal chimney? Many grilling enthusiasts swear by waiting until all the coals are ashed over, but is that re...

    You only need to ash it over if you're using lighter fluid.

    It would be nice if the huntsman has a similar accessory like the kettle joe to increase the cooking vertical cooking space. With the huntsman lid design and weight it's not going to possible.

    Disagree that only alternatives are ceramic Kamados. Akorn Auto Kamado is the true value winner in my book. Can be found for $300 and got mine on a crazy sale for $225. If anyone is looking for evidence of bias, for me it is the lack of mention of this metal alternative. They use dual layers similar to a metal thermos for their heat retention. Not perfect, but 1/3 the price.

    • @GrillTopExperience
      @GrillTopExperience День тому

      I mentioned the Weber Summit Kamado. I don't think many would look at the Akorn and the Huntsman and think they are directly comparable.

    • @texusyup6207
      @texusyup6207 День тому

      @@GrillTopExperience. Metal, kamado, automatic and remote temperature control, under $1k. Yeah right, not comparable at all. LOL. But I guess there are some differences like the Auto Kamado shelves coming included but Spider charges an extra $150 for theirs, and the Huntsman lacking much headroom, so no tall cooks or room for warming rack.

      Everyone needs to establish their own risk tolerance. You can reduce that risk significantly by buying a better brush and replacing it more often.

      Do you need me to say yes to convince a significant other? Something you have with more space and the same controller is harder to justify the upgrade.

    Is updating a Weber kettle a waste of money? I have a Weber kettle from 2004, it has an ash catcher, but none of the little things. I have added a thermometer and it has a lid hanger. I often think about updating it, but I don't see what I would get besides hangers on the handle. Is there anything really different between today's model and one 20-year-old?

    • @GrillTopExperience
      @GrillTopExperience День тому

      It's up to you if the tool hanger on the handle is worth it. The one creature comfort for me that is non negotiable is the ash catcher over the dinner plate on the original.

    No starter cubes. I save a cup of bacon grease in the freezer and put a small chunk in a piece of paper folded like a square and put it in with the crumpled paper as usual. The grease helps the fire burn longer to start your coals better.
